Yankees Beginning To Show Interest In Morales

Sep 17, 2014 4:16 AM

The New York Yankees are among the teams showing interest in Kendrys Morales, according to sources.

Morales remains a free agent and once the first day of baseball's amateur draft is complete next Thursday, a club can sign him without losing a high pick.

Mark Teixeira has missed New York's last three games with a wrist injury. Brian McCann was forced to make his first professional start at first base on Wednesday night.

The Yankees are also worried about Carlos Beltran, who is trying to avoid surgery to remove bone spurs in his right elbow.

Orioles Aren't Worried About Santana's Opt-Out Date

Sep 17, 2014 6:07 PM

Johan Santana will throw five innings or 75 pitches in an extended spring training game on Tuesday before his next step is determined.

The left-hander has an opt-out clause at the end of the month in the Minor League deal that he signed in the offseason.

That's open for discussion. I think the June 1 date was a date we had in mind that he would be close to being ready for the big leagues," Dane Duquette said. "It's a fluid situation."

Santana, 35, has not pitched in a major league game since Aug. 17, 2012.

Franco Hopes Independent Deal Opens Doors

Oct 31, 2014 4:45 AM

Julio Franco, 55, hopes that playing for the Fort Worth Cats of the Independent United League will open doors that will allow him to continue his baseball career.

"I want to stay in baseball and this is a neat opportunity for me to stay close to the game," Franco said.

"If you stay home, people forget about you and you may not get back in. I want to get back in as a coach, hitting coach, bench coach, future manager. This is a great opportunity."

Franco will play for the Cats during the club's first homestand, which starts Tuesday night and is nine games long.

It's also a chance to play professional baseball in five different decades.

"That means a lot, but it doesn't stop there," Franco said.
